All the bugs moved down here. At night, you can see big black bugs crawling on the walls, ceiling, floor. It’s one of the worst Army posts. We aren’t allowed to walk across the field at night, because guys have been getting stabbed, killed and everything else.
Fort Rucker, Alabama: My brother’s flight training start and his launching pad to Vietnam. Much too hot for a Jersey boy, he’s sunburned and doesn’t even enjoy a beer due to the oppressive heat and humidity, so he’s turned to Coke. He thinks they must train here so you get used to the heat. Prep for the jungle. And like Vietnam, the sky is full of helicopters. The only folks who will avoid a send off soon to Nam are a few Air Traffic Controllers, the other 95% of them are certain to go.
